• 2017 Merit Award from Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC)
• Client: Lee University
Lee University is a private university in Tennessee, consistently ranked in the “Top Tier” in the South by U.S. News & World Report. As the University excels and its reputation expands, it is experiencing significant growth. Naturally, that growth creates facility needs.
The Deacon Jones Dining Hall offers a perfect example. For Lee University students, the Dining Hall is more than just a place to eat – it’s a gathering site for friends and a welcome break from classes. It can even be the perfect place to study, right after grabbing a snack and a cup of coffee. However, the Dining Hall is located in a building originally constructed in 1918, almost a century ago.
In early 2017, University officials agreed: It was time for a complete renovation, as long as the construction work could be conducted while the kitchen remained open and in operation. To make the assignment even more interesting, all the construction had to be completed in 50 days.
Lee Company accepted the challenge, providing a complete design-build Mechanical and Plumbing approach. Even with unexpected and unavoidable delays, Lee Company completed the job safely and on time. The kitchen remained open throughout, with only one four-hour shutdown required for the gas tie-in. That kind of achievement definitely deserves an A!
