Sustainable Energy

By definition sustainable energy is the provision of energy such that it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. These are energy sources which are not expected to be depleted in a time frame relevant to the human race.

Sustainable energy sources are most often regarded as including all renewable sources, such as solar power, wind power, wave power, hydropower, and geothermal. In Middle Tennessee we have been utilizing hydroelectric energy for decades, and many of these plants have operated for over 100 years. This technology has been around since the industrial revolution at the end of the 19th century.

Solar energy and geothermal energy have recently been a topic of discussion. Solar heating consists of thermal collectors, which moves the heat from the collectors to its point of usage, and a reservoir tank for heat storage. These systems can be used to heat domestic hot water, space heating, and swimming pool water. Solar panels are also providing sustainable energy to power items such as power attic ventilators. Solar lighting is also becoming popular for home owners as well. Geothermal heating and cooling utilizes the constant ground temperature to provide efficiencies 3 to 4 times that of conventional HVAC systems.
