HVAC Mechanical Systems: Using Telepresence to Add Transparency and Efficiency

May 29, 2019

For facility owners and managers, understanding and validating recommended HVAC service options is a real challenge. When you’re not confident about the information provided, it’s natural to delay critical decisions on repairs, equipment usage, and capital expenditures.

Fortunately, you don’t have to rely on paper documentation and verbal assurances from an HVAC technician anymore. Today’s telepresence technology delivers the transparent data you need to make strategic decisions efficiently and keep your HVAC mechanical systems in top shape.

What is telepresence?

According to the Oxford Dictionary, “Telepresence is the use of virtual reality technology, especially for remote control of machinery or for apparent participation in distant events.

While the technology is complex, the approach is simple. Telepresence enhances your access to real-time information, expands a service provider’s workforce, and enables the delivery of better solutions, faster.

For example, at Lee Company, telepresence technology allows us to obtain audio, video, and other equipment data from the field and send it to our Virtual Support Center. Seasoned pros at the center then draw on their years of experience and customer knowledge to help the HVAC field technicians analyze the data, identify equipment issues, and find solutions.

For customers, telepresence technology provides transparent data and informed feedback. You gain the insight and clarity needed to:

  • Make decisions with confidence
  • Ensure that service, calibration, and maintenance all contribute to enhanced performance and efficiency
  • Optimize the lifecycle of essential HVAC systems

Is now the time for telepresence?

How do you make a decision to add telepresence to your HVAC program? Start by considering all the options. In addition to expanding the expert team working on your HVAC mechanical systems, telepresence technology at Lee Company provides:

  • Access to the Virtual Support Center team to help your in-house staff resolve equipment issues
  • Remote monitoring of facilities and building automation systems (BAS), including regular checks of designated points, temperatures, and alarms
  • Ability to ask the Virtual Support Center to make adjustments or dispatch Lee Company technicians, based upon customer-specific protocols

At Lee Company, part of our mission is “to create a workplace where our employees can thrive.” We’re honored and strengthened by the many employees who make Lee Company their professional home – often for decades! We want you to know the dedicated pros making a difference for all the customers and communities we serve. Periodically, we’ll highlight team members as they reach milestone career marks. Thanks and congrats to this 2019 achiever!

20 Years

Bryan E.

Superintendent, Large Construction

When he joined Lee Company in 1999, Bryan thought he’d be hired as a superintendent, given his work experience. Instead, he started as a plumbing foreman, spent two years learning “the Lee Company way,” and was then promoted to superintendent. During the past 20 years, Bryan has trained a number of plumbing pros, passing along the Lee Company dedication to always doing the right thing. Many of the foremen he has trained are now supervisors, continuing to advance in their careers. Bryan says he appreciates the close-knit family feel at Lee Company and knows this team is always ready to help customers and each other.

“Teach somebody something. Someone took the time to help you learn. Pass that on – pay it forward.”

A reason to give back: Purity Moosic City DairyPure Dash

May 23, 2019

reason to give back“The Secret to living is giving,” one of Tony Robbins’ simple truths that reminds us we are here to make a difference. One of the ways Lee Company continues to give back to the Middle Tennessee community is by partnering with Purity Dairies on their annual Moosic City DairyPure Dash.

Since 2000, this Nashville-based race has garnered support from all over the Middle Tennessee community. It began as a 5K race and one-mile walk to honor Glenn Wunder, a friend of the race organizer, who passed away from pancreatic cancer. The event raises money for a different non-profit organization every year, and for the past 6 years, Lee Company has proudly sponsored the Glenn Wunder Mighty Mile.

At the check presentation on May 2nd, we learned that $150,000 were raised for The Jason Foundation, this year’s beneficiary. Since the race began 19 years ago, Purity Dairies has raised one million dollars! Other beneficiaries over the years have included: PENCIL, Gilda’s Club, Alive Hospice, High Hopes, and Special Olympics Tennessee.

“We love supporting our local communities, and this race is one of the ways we can continue to do that. On race day, when you look into the faces around you: the runners, the volunteers, the organization you’re helping to raise money for, you can’t help but be inspired. You realize that what we do does make a difference. I love being reminded of that at this event.” – Emily Bonomo, Marketing Coordinator

What inspires you? Is it making a difference in someone’s life? Is it raising money for a cause? Is it seeing someone accomplish a goal? Is it you accomplishing a goal of your own? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you should consider getting involved in this event next year. Click here to learn more.

R22 and You: Appreciate Depreciation

May 16, 2019

For business owners and facility managers, the concept of spending unnecessary money on a new HVAC system is, well, chilling. But so is the concept of leaving money on the table!

R22, also known as Freon, is on the way out. EPA action makes it illegal to produce or import R22 as of Jan. 1, 2020. That creates a challenge, as companies try to decide whether to replace compressors that use R22, convert them, or simply maintain them and hope for the best.

At the same time, another government action provides a strong incentive for replacing HVAC systems. The new Tax Cuts and Jobs Act allows business owners to depreciate 100% of the cost of an HVAC system in the first year1, rather than spreading that depreciation over 39 years. The change can create tremendous tax savings.

Should you buy a new HVAC system in 2019, and capture those tax benefits? Every situation is different, and you’ll want to talk to your financial experts about your company’s approach.

Lee Company uses predictive maintenance technology to help our facility customers determine the best plan of action. R22 and You: What’s Your Action Plan?

May 16, 2019

Benjamin Franklin never got to enjoy air conditioning – Willis Carrier invented the first modern air conditioning system in 1902. But, Franklin could have been talking about today’s HVAC systems and R22, when he said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.”

Fortunately, the EPA has given facility managers time to plan: The rule outlawing the production and import of R22 (also known as Freon) doesn’t take effect until Jan. 1, 2020.

Planning today can save money and headaches down the road. As you formulate your R22 action plan, keep these three factors in mind:

  1. The scope of your HVAC system
How many compressors are in your facilities? How old are they, and how well have they been maintained? The useful lifespan of HVAC equipment averages around 15 years, but that varies. Do you have a good feel for the condition of the equipment?
  2. The cost involved with repair or replacement
While most manufacturers are not recommending conversions, no one wants to buy a new HVAC system until it’s necessary. As you review the costs involved, remember that new systems may be more energy efficient. Also, with the production of R22 down and further production cuts slotted for 2019, the cost of the refrigerant continues to rise – pushing repair and maintenance costs up.
  3. The other costs involved
What’s the worst-case R22 scenario for your business? Let’s say the AC goes out on a hot summer day, and it’s clearly not cost-effective to repair the unit. Can you afford to open the windows and hope for a breeze while you wait for a replacement?

The best time to make a change
Lee Company uses predictive maintenance to help our facility customers take an educated look ahead, and determine the probable, useful lifespan of their HVAC systems. In Franklin, Tenn., (yep, our HQ town is named for Ben) and throughout our service area, we’re helping customers develop a strategic R22 action plan. Find out what we can do for you!
