Local home and facilities solutions company donates more than 91,108 pounds of food to Second Harvest

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Home repairs can be a mundane task in the daily grind of life, but one local home and facilities solutions company has found a way to make the experience one that is both humbling and heartwarming. Lee Company runs an annual food drive called Vans for Cans where when a technician comes to a customer’s home, they ask if they would like to donate food to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee.

The program gives customers the opportunity to give back to those in need through a can drive, and the results have been overwhelming. For the past few months Lee Company has collected donations for the Vans 4 Cans program, and today they will donate record-breaking 91,108 pounds of food to Second Harvest, the largest food drive organized by one company.

“I can think of few things more important than feeding a hungry child and no one does that better than Second Harvest,” said Gerry Vance, executive vice president of Lee Company. “Their mission aligns with ours, which is to serve others. Through the Vans 4 Cans program, we get to do this collaboratively with our customers, our suppliers, and our employees, which makes it much more meaningful.”

The program raised more than 14,000 pounds of food in 2011, and the goal for 2012 was to double that amount through the addition of a competition within the Lee Company office involving employees – a goal that was well surpassed. Each group has also rallied donations from commercial customers, as well as vendors.

“We are so grateful to Lee Company for their continued support of our food bank and the battle against hunger in Tennessee,” said Jaynee Day, President and CEO of Second Harvest. “Through programs such as their Vans 4 Cans food drive, we are able to help the vast number of people in our community that struggle with huger every day.”

One in six Americans and one in four children are food insecure. Donations to Second Harvest help to fund the food bank’s feeding programs and food resources for emergency food assistance programs in 46 counties in Middle and West Tennessee.
