More Than an Internship
Forget the stereotype of interns spending their day making coffee or sitting in meetings they don’t understand.
From the first week, they are part of the team and contributing to real work.
They help coordinate active construction projects, support engineering and design teams, contribute to marketing and HR initiatives, assist with Building Information Modeling (BIM), and experience firsthand how our teams come together to serve our customers. Every assignment has a purpose because we believe the best way to learn is by doing.
Luke P., who joined Lee Company as a Large Construction Intern before becoming an Assistant Project Manager, puts it simply:
“It’s a great opportunity to get exposed to the trades and gain hands-on experience. You get the chance to contribute to meaningful work while seeing if you could envision yourself doing something similar in the future.”
Learning Beyond the Classroom
There’s a difference between reading about a project and seeing it come to life.
Our internship program bridges the gap between theory and practice by giving students opportunities to apply what they’ve learned in real-world situations. Whether they’re studying engineering, construction management, business, or another related field, interns see how classroom concepts translate into solutions that make a difference every day.
Rileigh G., a current Smart Buildings Intern, says, “As a chemical engineering major, I came into this internship with a broad knowledge of how HVAC systems worked … Through different groups, engineering and project management, I have been able to see a practical application in the field of what I have learned within school.”
That same connection between classroom learning and real work stood out to Ana R., who completed our HR internship.
“It was great to see how those things work in the real world,” she says. “Moving forward, I’m excited to apply the experience and knowledge I received while supporting a positive and thriving environment for employees.”
Mentorship Every Step of the Way
Every intern is paired with experienced team members who provide guidance, answer questions, and share the kind of knowledge you won’t find in a textbook. That support extends beyond technical skills. Our mentors help interns develop confidence, improve communication, and better understand what a career in construction, engineering, or business operations can look like after graduation.

Safety Starts on Day One
Working hands-on also means learning how to work safely.
Interns receive the safety training needed for their role, helping them confidently navigate job sites, offices, and active work environments. Building good habits early prepares students for successful careers while reinforcing one of our most important priorities: looking out for one another.

One of the best parts of our internship program is the community built along the way.
Interns collaborate with one another throughout the summer, participate in networking and team-building events, and experience our culture firsthand.

For Project Management Intern Grady G., the internship also became the first step toward a full-time career
“My internship gave me some baseline knowledge on how plumbing and HVAC systems work … The internship also helped me understand the role of the Project Manager in the construction process and helped me get familiar with the team I’d be working with.”
