Metro Parks approached Lee Company to replace a pool dehumidification unit (PDU) that was at the end of its life. Apart from disassembly, the dimensions were too large to remove from the mechanical room, and access to the room was limited. The good news? Lee Company was up for the challenge!
Customer Goals:
- Replace the PDU while working around the two additional AHUs, around the same size, in the mechanical room.
- Work with limited access to the mechanical room, as it was located on the mezzanine above the pool locker rooms – more specifically, access was via the ceiling of a janitor’s closet with a 30” x 30” floor hatch.
Solutions:
- The PDU on the roof required a structural engineer and steel contractor to provide a steel superstructure to support the new unit and new roof penetrations.
- Room access required a new 5’6”x5’6” roof curb with an integral roof hatch for equipment removal and installation in the future.
- The existing PDU continued conditioning the pool area for the construction phases, limiting downtime and disruption to the occupied space.
- The solution also kept the work in the mechanical room and on the roof – limiting construction traffic through occupied areas during the project.
Results:
- The project was design-build and turn-key.
- Lee Company used in-house engineering, electrical, and Smart Buildings Groups.
- A design-build structural subcontractor and roofing subcontractor were used for the full package.
